A wide variety of working surfaces are available, and the choice of worktop must take into account: aesthetics, cost, longevity, stain, heat and scratch resistance suitability. The most commonly used materials are:
TRESPA TOPLAB PLUS
CORIAN SOLID SURFACE
Manufactured by the DuPont company, Corian is a solid non-porous surfacing material composed from acrylic resins and natural minerals, which can be formed with seamless joints for use in clean, sterile environments, stains and damages can be easily repaired. Corian is available in a wide variety of colours. Labfurn is an accredited DuPont fabricator
of Corian worktops.
LAMINATED SALIGNA 38mm or 32mm
This is a local solid timber worktop. It comprises of 38mm Saligna (Eucalyptus) in 22mm strips bonded lengthwise with multiple finger joints to the required lengths. The finished product is lighter in appearance than Iroko, and is not as hardy or durable. It is commonly and successfully used in educational laboratories.
POST FORMED FORMICA
Generally manufactured using .9mm Post Forming grade high pressure Formica resin laminate bonded onto 32mm particle board. Whilst being a very clean working surface, plastic laminate tops show slight resistance to staining and scratching and can be damaged by heat. They are not recommended for damp conditions as they tend to swell and de-laminate. A preference for this type of surface has been shown by the medical, food and pharmaceutical industries.
SOLID IROKOPreviously the most widely used laboratory working surface, finished in either twin-pack polyacrethane, polyurethane or raw linseed oil. These tops have the advantage of being sanded and re-surfaced if damaged.
The maximum width of joints should be 150mm to minimise the possibility of movement due to changes in humidity.
STAINLESS STEEL
Widely used in areas that need to be kept sterile e.g. hospital and medical research laboratories and also in isotope laboratories. Usually of Grade 304 or 316.
Other materials are available including PVC, Polypropylene, granite, Durcon Epoxy Resin, lead sheeting, heat resistant ceramic tiles etc. Further information, catalogues and specifications are available on request.
